Why LSU’s 2026 Football Head Coach Can’t Get Out of His Own Way

Lane Kiffin is a man of extreme character, as we have witnessed his antics since he entered the college football scene in 2009 with Tennessee. After one disappointing 7-6 season with the Volunteers, the coach everyone in Knoxville rallied behind headed west to become the head coach of USC’s football program. He did this knowing he was leaving behind one of the most passionate fan bases in college football and didn’t really care. Years after his time at USC ended, it is clear that public perception of this 51-year-old coach hasn’t changed and, if anything, has only intensified to the point where his safety is a concern.

A few months ago, after finishing what most would call a successful regular season with Ole Miss, reports surfaced that LSU was poaching Kiffin with an offer that would pay him much more than at Ole Miss. For about two weeks, the public waited for the Rebels’ coach to address these claims and say whether he would return for his seventh season in Oxford. After a long wait, a choice was made, and as expected, he went where the money was and abandoned his team right before they were about to compete in the 2025 College Football Playoffs. The crazy thing about all this is that the NCAA allows coaches to jump ship midseason. In a way, this should prevent outsiders from getting mad at him, though Ole Miss fans have every right to be upset, whether before or after the season ended.

However, the persona LSU’s head coach embodies is so unique to college football that it makes the sport watchable. Kiffin should not be ashamed of the drama he is causing in Mississippi, as he had every right to go to LSU. While it may have been wrong morally, is this really the worst thing a coach or anyone in college football has done? His character is not the best, and his DMs have been leaked countless times on X, but he is playing the system perfectly. He is already a well-established coach whom people will watch. As long as LSU fans keep their expectations realistic, they shouldn’t be surprised when he inevitably jumps to another SEC team or maybe something new. After all is said and done, Lane Kiffin will most likely be remembered more for his controversy than his accolades. However, in a world filled with chaos, can you really blame the man for using it to his advantage?
