Why the New Steelers OL Coach Will Be Perfect for Pittsburgh’s Young Blocking Unit in 2026
With a complete change in the Steelers' coaching staff ahead of the 2026 season, James Campen was brought in to manage the Steel City’s offensive line. Campen spent seven years in the NFL, playing for the Saints and Packers. He later coached Green Bay’s linemen for 11 seasons, producing seven Pro Bowlers. Since leaving the Packers in 2019, the 62-year-old has spent time in Cleveland, Los Angeles, and Houston, serving as the offensive line coach for the Browns, Chargers, and Texans, and as the assistant head coach under Freddie Kitchens in Cleveland. Now he appears to be right back where he started, coaching under McCarthy and ready to lead an already proven and capable o-line to success. The oldest confirmed starter for the Steelers 2026 offensive line, Mason McCormick, is still just 26 years old. In the days of old, when Coach Tomlin and QB Ben Roethlisberger led the charge in Pittsburgh, the black and gold had a fantastic offensive line. Guys like Alejandro Villanueva, David DeCastro, Maurkice Pouncey, and Chukwuma Okorafor came in and dominated week in and week out, solidifying themselves as one of the best offensive line units in the league. Now, stepping into a new era of Steelers football, with a strong and hungry young core at the helm, Pittsburgh may be able to return to its glory days with its o-line.
Heavy changes have already followed since Campen took over. Troy Fautanu, along with McCormick, has been moved to the left side after playing all of last season on the right. This allows the ever-versatile Spencer Anderson to slide back into his preferred position at right guard. Anderson commented on Campen’s decision to move him, saying, “Obviously, he’s been around for a while, and obviously he’s coached a lot of All-Pro guys and high-level players. It’s been good having him around and just learning some new techniques.” One of Campen’s biggest mindsets is that coaching is about sharing what you know and elevating the next generation of players or coaches. The California native says, “I think the carryover is still the same, whether it’s high school or professional football. Coaching is coaching.” Having this mindset allows the 62-year-old coach to learn while he teaches. He understands that every new person he interacts with, coach or player, can teach him just as much as he teaches them, building a better relationship and stronger on-field production. When asked about his love of coaching, the former center said, “More than anything, the people. Coaching is an extension of being a player, and it doesn't matter what level you play, you get to experience the joy of it on game day, and you can almost put yourself into the player.” If Campen can connect to the players in the Steel City, these young bucks are ready to take the next step towards greatness; only success will follow.
Heading into 2026, the Steelers already have a very strong, competent offensive line. Center Zach Frazier is often credited as a top-three center behind Chiefs Creed Humphrey and Raiders Tyler Linderbaum. His draft partner, Fautanu, has stepped in looking sharp as ever after an injury-filled rookie season, while the often-underappreciated McCormick has done a fantastic job sliding in between Frazier and Fautanu. Despite reports that rookie Gennings Dunker will take over the backup left guard spot rather than the starting right guard position, the Steelers' o-line depth cannot be overlooked. Campen and McCarthy may have different plans for Dunker than fans initially thought, but Campen still believes in making connections with everyone, saying, “I am approachable. I'm fair. I abide by what Coach McCarthy has always told us, way back in 2006. Our job was to teach and demand. But you have to be compassionate. You have to build relationships.” A player-first, communication-forward coach is now at the helm of Pittsburgh’s young and hungry offensive line. Only time will tell how it turns out in 2026, but the former Panther offensive line coach seems like the perfect guy for the black and gold.
