The Rangers Next 2026 Offseason Move Now That the Ottawa Captain is Off the Table
As the New York Rangers prepare for the 2026 NHL Draft this coming Friday, a huge blow has been dealt to one of their potential moves. Just a day and a half prior, the Florida Panthers took advantage and made the trade for the Ottawa Senators' captain, Brady Tkachuk. A devastating blow for New York, as a power forward like that had the grit this Rangers team surely could have pursued. Sending three first-round picks and a second-round pick to Ottawa, the Panthers reunite the Tkachuk brothers and look to return to the Stanley Cup Finals after a season plagued with injuries. Although there's no telling if the 26-year-old captain had any interest in coming to New York, any hope of that now has vanished, and it leaves fans to wonder what the next move will be for the Rangers this offseason.
A big blow to the gut indeed, but the Rangers can't let that distract them this offseason; they need to keep their heads in the game and move forward. No doubt a big decision this offseason, which now helps them focus more on their other big decision this offseason, which is Vincent Trocheck. Still very likely to move on from the 32-year-old center, that trade may mean that Florida is off the board for a potential landing spot. With their captain now gone, this Ottawa lineup will definitely look interesting next season, looking to make up for the absence of a player like Tkachuk. When it comes to Ottawa as a potential landing spot for the New York center, it looks unlikely he’ll be willing to waive a no-trade clause to go there, especially with Ottawa looking to be aggressive on some remaining free agents this offseason.
A missed opportunity, maybe, and it may even have some negative effects going forward. Going at it the same way Florida did, with draft picks, New York may have easily offered their fifth and 26th overall picks, as well as a few second-round picks. A high price, no doubt, but at least it opened up a path to improving this Rangers team. With that path now closed, the road may have just gotten a lot bumpier. As a trade to move up in the coming NHL Draft looks more unlikely every minute, options are running out for Chris Drury, as well as Rangers fans' patience with him, if there is any left at this point. It’s draft week for the New York Rangers, and while all eyes may be focusing on that, hopefully Drury can keep looking ahead and still save this offseason.
