Why the Yankees Should Re-Sign This Former MVP

MLB

The New York Yankees have four current or former MVPs on the roster currently. Aaron Judge is injured, while Giancarlo Stanton cannot play the field and can barely run the bases. Paul Goldschmidt is struggling offensively, while the fourth MVP is putting on a display of excellence not seen often in these parts. Cody Bellinger has come back from a nagging back injury that slowed him down in April and May to return to the form that many had hoped for when he was acquired this past offseason. In fact, he is making a case to be retained beyond this season.

The Yankees have a few good reasons to re-sign Cody. He is, firstly, Yankee royalty. He is the son of outfielder Clay Bellinger, who was a part of two World Championship teams in 1999 and 2000. Cody is a rarity in that he wanted to play in New York. He has been quoted often speaking about the experience of being on the field with his father during the dynasty years, soaking in the championship celebration. Cody went on himself to win a World Series in 2020 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Cody knows what it takes to win, and the Yankees need more of this.

Cody Bellinger is a player whose impact goes beyond mere statistics. He is known for his all-around game. Cody excels in hitting for average and situational hitting. He has showcased a classic lefty power stroke perfectly suited for Yankee Stadium, reminiscent of Paul O'Neill. In the field, Bellinger effortlessly covers ground, making several memorable catches while playing all three outfield spots.

The loss of Aaron Judge to a flexor injury has raised concerns about his future playing time. In his absence, Cody Bellinger has demonstrated leadership through his performance and conduct. He exemplifies professionalism in every sense. If Cody chooses to opt out of his contract, the Yankees face a significant decision. Bellinger will require a substantial financial commitment. However, the various aspects of Cody's game are too valuable to overlook. He should be part of the veteran core around which emerging young talents can be built. By doing so, the Yankees may yet stay in the championship conversation going forward. Investing in Bellinger now could be the key to securing the team’s future success.
