Will the Stars Return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2025?
The Dallas Stars have been making some big changes to their roster and coaching team since they were eliminated from the playoffs by the Edmonton Oilers in the Western Conference Final. The Stars have made appearances in the playoffs several times over the last few years, and in my opinion, this season shouldn’t be an exception. With a new head coach, some new and returning players, and a new mindset, I think the Stars are looking at another chance to fight for the Stanley Cup. Here’s what to consider when looking at the Stars’ chances of returning to the playoffs in 2025.
First of all, it’s no secret that the Stars have lost some talent during this offseason due to free agency and trades. In June, the Stars traded Mason Marchment to the Seattle Kraken in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2026 draft and a 2025 fourth-round pick. The New Jersey Devils acquired Evgenii Dadonov once he became a free agent, and Mikael Granlund was signed by the Anaheim Ducks. Additionally, the Stars lost Cody Ceci as he will now be playing in Los Angeles for the Kings.
Onto some better news, the Stars have signed several contract extensions and brought in some new talent as well. Left Wing Jamie Benn signed a one-year contract extension, and center Matt Duchene a four-year extension. Of course, Mikko Rantanen, Wyatt Johnston, and Sam Steel are also extended for longer periods of time. In addition, the Stars fired head coach Pete DeBoer after their elimination from the playoffs. Now, Glen Gulutzan will be taking over for DeBoer, returning to the team for the first time since 2013.
While the Stars did lose or trade away several fan favorites and talented players, I still think they have a strong team going into the upcoming season. Most of their core stayed intact after all the trades and free agency. With a new mind behind the bench, it will be an adjustment for sure. However, I anticipate this shift being good for the Stars as they look to overcome the trouble they have previously had getting past the Western Conference Finals in the playoffs.
