Why This Veteran Receiver Will Never Be a Giant Again
There are few and far between wide receivers that have really put their name on the map with the New York Giants. Odell Beckham Jr. has been one of them over the course of the last several years. He has been from team to team, but he has not had the satisfaction of staying with one for very long. However, he hasn’t forgotten who drafted him back in 2014, and that was the New York Football Giants. That’s where he got started, and since then, he has moved on. Beckham is currently a free agent in the NFL and has not been signed by any of the 32 teams. There have been rumors of him coming back to New York, but there are several reasons as to why he will never be returning to Big Blue.
One of the top reasons he will not be coming back is how the Giants have taken the direction of their current team. They want young guys who can make things happen on the field. The Giants are heavily invested in their receiving core. They had standout receiver Malik Nabers breaking the record of 1,200 in his first season, which was also complemented by reliable veterans such as Darius Slayon and Wan’Dale Robinson. They don’t want to move backwards; the Giants want to move forward, and if they bring Beckham in, he is going to clash with the future of this offensive line.
Another area to look at is the Giants’ roster. It’s already full, and they do not need to add any more players to it at the moment. If they did, Beckham would take a key spot away from one of their more durable and younger players. The Giants need to evaluate everything with him, and since he left, the 32-year-old has had recent health struggles. He’s had issues with his knees, his skin, and several other injuries over the years. His one-year stint with Miami didn’t go as planned either; he only appeared in nine games with nine catches for 55 yards.
As much as OBJ has stated that he never wanted to leave the Giants in the first place. It was for the best, and he will no longer be able to return to them unless he goes on with a ceremonial one-day contract so he can retire as a New York Giant if he so chooses. He remains beloved by the former team, but the Giants are prioritizing youth, growth, and cohesion that they currently have. Beckham will just have to keep searching to find out where his next steps are going to be.
