Will the Chargers Win the First NFL Game in Brazil?

NFL

The 2025 NFL season kicks off with a twist as the Los Angeles Chargers face off against the reigning AFC West Champions, the Kansas City Chiefs. This primetime showdown marks the league’s first-ever regular season game in South America, bringing star quarterbacks, elite coaching, and fierce division rivalry to an international audience. Jim Harbaugh enters his second year as the head coach, and the Chargers are eager to snap a seven-game losing streak against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. All eyes will be on São Paulo next Friday night.

The Chargers enter Week One in Brazil with cautious optimism, but toppling the Chiefs is no small feat. Patrick Mahomes has dominated the AFC West for years, and Kansas City’s continuity on both sides of the ball gives them a clear edge. Although Los Angeles has reason to believe this could be the turning point. With Jim Harbaugh’s disciplined system, Justin Herbert healthy and surrounded by fresh offensive talent, the Chargers may finally have the formula to break their losing streak against Kansas City. If the defense can contain Mahomes and the offense avoids early miscues, the Chargers could leave São Paulo with more than just a historic appearance.

Several key players will need to deliver if the Chargers hope to flip the script. Quarterback Justin Herbert remains the centerpiece; his ability to stretch the field and make plays under pressure will be crucial against Kansas City’s defense. Newly acquired running back Najee Harris, recently activated after a preseason injury scare, could be a game-changer with his physical running style and redzone efficiency. On defense, edge rusher Joey Bosa and safety Derwin James Jr. will be tasked with containing Patrick Mahomes and limiting explosive plays. Rookie Omarion Hampton may also see meaningful snaps in the backfield, adding a fresh dynamic to the offense. The Chargers need to play fast, hit hard, and disrupt Kansas City’s rhythm early. Forcing Kansas City to play catch-up is the key to winning this game.
