Will the Saints Versatile QB Be a Part of New Orleans Plans This Season?
Taysom Hill has built a unique career in New Orleans, logging 105 regular-season games with 2,369 passing yards, 2,437 rushing yards, and 33 total touchdowns. Undrafted out of BYU in 2017, the 34-year-old “Swiss Army Knife” has become a rare utility weapon, contributing as a quarterback, tight end, runner, and special teamer. As the Saints enter a new chapter with Kellen Moore taking over as head coach, there’s renewed interest in how Hill might fit into a more modern and aggressive offense. While Hill's versatility is intriguing, his age, recent injury history, and contract make his future with the team uncertain.
Kellen Moore spent last season as the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles, where he implemented creative packages that used motion, misdirection, and versatile personnel. He has a track record of maximizing the potential of unconventional athletes, a skill he also demonstrated during his stints with the Cowboys and Chargers. Now leading the Saints, Moore could see Hill as a valuable chess piece in short-yardage, red zone, or trick-play scenarios. From a schematic standpoint, Hill seems like an ideal fit in Moore’s vision of a dynamic, unpredictable offense.
Still, the toll of Hill’s physical style is beginning to show. At 34 years old and coming off a season shortened by significant injuries, his durability is now a legitimate concern. He played in just eight games in 2024, accumulating 278 rushing yards on 39 carries but failing to score a touchdown all year. Even though he averaged a strong 7.1 yards per carry, the lack of availability could make it tough for Moore to rely on him in a consistent role. Another key factor is Hill’s contract, which is hefty for someone who is primarily used in situational packages. The Saints are dealing with salary cap constraints, and cutting ties with expensive, injury-prone veterans may be necessary to move forward. While Hill’s presence brings value, younger and more cost-effective players could offer similar flexibility at a fraction of the price. Moore and the front office will have to carefully evaluate whether Hill’s skill set is still worth the investment.
