X Factor: Why 2026 Could be the Breakout Season for Kansas City's 22-Year-Old Speedster

NFL

With the departure of Tyreek Hill in a trade to the Miami Dolphins in 2022, the Kansas City Chiefs were in search of another speedster at wide receiver; in 2024, they got him. Drafted out of Texas University by the Chiefs in the first round as the 28th overall pick, Xavier Worthy became the fastest weapon on the field for quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Worthy’s dazzling record-breaking performance at the NFL Combine, a blistering 4.21 seconds in the 40-yard dash, had Chiefs Kingdom excited for an elite downfield threat they hadn’t seen since Hill. For a first-round pick, expectations were high for the Texas wideout, expectations that have somewhat dimmed for some Chiefs fans in the wake of the 22-year-old’s first two years at Arrowhead.

The very first time Worthy touched the ball in a Chiefs’ uniform in a handoff by Mahomes, he immediately turned heads and showed off the reason he was there. The then-rookie receiver outran multiple Baltimore Ravens defenders to score on a 21-yard run for a touchdown. The rocket-powered phenom went on to catch a receiving touchdown for 35 yards in that same game for a total of 68 scrimmage yards on three touches. This was the kind of debut fans wanted out of their first-round draft pick. In his rookie year, Worthy had 638 receiving yards and six touchdowns. However, there was concern with the 22-year-old’s ability to track the deep ball and catch out of bounds using body awareness. The following year, in 2025, he had fewer yards receiving with 532 and just one touchdown. Despite Worthy’s receiving weaknesses, 2025’s lower output can be boiled down to injury. In Week One against the Los Angeles Chargers, the former Texas wideout was in a collision with teammate Travis Kelce, dislocating his shoulder and tearing his labrum. The receiver was out of action for two weeks before returning with a shoulder brace to play through what was a significant injury. Though he showed a lot of heart playing through the pain of not only an injured shoulder but also an injured ankle, Worthy was clearly not 100%.

The 2026 NFL season needs to be a breakout year for the young 22-year-old ball catcher, and being healthy with a new receivers coach is a great start. Chad O’Shea has over 20 years of NFL experience, ten of those with the New England Patriots. With Worthy entering his third year as a Chief, he is starting to stack experience with some of the best the game has ever seen in Andy Reid, Kelce, and Mahomes. With the 2026 NFL Draft coming up, there’s talk that KC is interested in picking a receiver. This may be just the thing to ignite a competitive spirit in Worthy to get him speeding down the field more often and consistently, and finding the end zone just like he did the first time he ever touched the ball at Arrowhead.
