Yankees Claim 14th Win of the 2026 Season with Shutout Against the Red Sox

MLB

The New York Yankees met their biggest rival in the Boston Red Sox for the first time within the 2026 season at Fenway Park. Yankees starter Luis Gil allowed just two hits in six innings as the Bronx Bombers came out on top on the road, 4-0. With the win, New York claims their 14th win of the season, standing with a two-game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays. During Wednesday night’s matchup, Max Fried will try to help the Yankees win their fifth consecutive game against Ranger Suárez, who’s trying to shape back into his all-star form from 2024.

Constant Consistency from Gil Is Key for the 2026 Yankees

During the 2024 MLB season, Gil won 15 games for New York. A year later, after 11 starts, the 2024 AL Rookie of the Year was shut down for the season. Gil is trying to get back to the form he once was in. His first two starts of the 2026 season against the Rays and the Los Angeles Angels didn’t go the way the 27-year-old wanted them to. Manager Aaron Boone is trying to build Gil’s confidence once again. In the sixth inning, the 2024 AL Rookie of the Year allowed runners at first and second, instead of allowing a run and ruining Gil’s confidence for the night, Boone smartly took him out. While Gil didn’t finish strong during that final inning he pitched, the 27-year-old should still have a huge boost of confidence heading into his next start.

If we see consistent outings from Gil in his next few starts, he could have the potential to have a huge bounce-back season, even possibly his first all-star appearance. Constant consistency on the mound will be tough, playing different opponents with different strengths at the plate, yet Gil has shown how great he could be if his confidence is sky-high. A confident 2024 AL Rookie of the Year could help the Bronx Bombers continue to hold that top spot in the AL East Division. Gil, Fried, and Cam Schlittler could be a three-headed monster, and that’s even without the Yankees having Gerrit Cole at their disposal.

Yankees Must Continue to Put Pressure on the Red Sox

A big shutout 4-0 win during their first meeting of the season could be a big statement, that is, if the Yankees continue to put pressure on the Red Sox. That means winning the series at Fenway or a sweep could continue to set the bar the Bronx Bombers have been looking to pass in 2026. Their next meeting together wouldn’t be until the beginning of June. New York being able to hold this series win or even sweep over Boston’s head would give the Yankees assurance that they can do it again on their home field in June.
