It's a very interesting time for the New York Rangers as they look to rediscover their identity. Although all of their problems cannot be solved in a single Summer, there's no reason for them not to make the most of each one, especially with them carrying two crucial first-round picks. Rangers fans across the league await general manager Chris Drury to start making Summer moves since declaring the start of their rebuild.
Looking to be a stacked offseason at the start of the previous season, each and every top superstar has become unavailable. With no promising stars available, it leaves no big moves for the Blueshirts to make to turn their team around in the coming season. Although no big names are available, there are still smaller options as free agency approaches, and a few may just be a step in the right direction for the Rangers. If New York truly wants to move forward into a successful retool, could these potential targets be the perfect fit?
Michael Bunting
When a team is looking to improve almost every aspect, it's important to have players who can play in the middle of the lineup. It would seem Michael Bunting fits that description perfectly. Although his offense over the last few seasons has depleted, the 30-year-old's situational awareness feels like a golden third liner for the Blueshirts. Although the offense has declined since the 2021-22 season, his productivity in limited minutes could be very beneficial under a coach like Mike Sullivan. Coming off an early exit in the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs with the Dallas Stars, the Ontario native also brings a good sense of irritation to opposing teams. Ranger fans do well to enjoy a type of player who likes to get in the heads of the other team, and if they're willing to spend a bit this offseason, it's certainly worth consideration.
Pavel Dorofeyev
Clearly, there's no free agent out there that can save the Rangers' coming season, but there's certainly a potential top-six young forward that can put them ahead of schedule. Beginning this season with a hat trick on opening night with the Vegas Golden Knights, Pavel Dorofeyev has shown the NHL that he's got absolutely no sign of slowing down. Coming off a second straight season with 35 or more goals, the 25-year-old looks to become a restricted free agent this Summer. While no confirmation has been made that an offer sheet won't be made, the Rangers need to understand quickly that the Russian winger is the definition of a player they should pursue.
If the Blueshirts are willing to spend this offseason, a raise will certainly be needed, as the six-foot-one winger makes only $1.8 million. With how loaded the Golden Knights are with superstars. While on his way to the 2026 Stanley Cup Finals, the 79th overall pick has been on an absolute tear with 10 goals, tied with the former Ranger Brett Howden for first in these playoffs, and looks to capture his first Stanley Cup. Amid the difficulty of acquiring this playoff performer, the Rangers would be well ahead of schedule with a player like this. In a team looking for more scoring in the top six, the cost and effort seem very much worth it, and they'd be foolish not to try all in their power to bring the Russian star to Broadway.
Alex Tuch
A big splash from the Blueshirts wouldn't be surprising at all, though it could be possible to make that statement for a top free agent forward. Being a part of a Buffalo Sabres season to remember, it's still hard to tell whether Alex Tuch will re-sign with the Sabres, especially with how high his price tag may be. Reaching the 30-goal mark yet again, Tuch looks to be one of the best free agents remaining. Following the Sabres’ second-round exit from the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs, in which the Syracuse native failed to register a single point against the Montreal Canadiens, this move may be slightly less likely. While still searching for a good fit, the Rangers would do well to ensure they're not overpaying; they may have the space, but are they certain about this potential move? While a good fit, no doubt, New York needs to be mindful that moves like these can certainly go either beneficial or disastrous when it comes to such a bleak future.
