Big East Basketball’s 2026-27 Season Looks Like Another War
Another offseason has brought shakeups across the NCAA, including the Big East. Known as one of the craziest conferences in the league, the Big East is home to many infamous teams, including UConn, Villanova, Georgetown, and St. John’s. The Red Storm have taken the Big East title for the last two seasons, for the first time in program history. The team emerged in recent years thanks to head coach Rick Pitino, who has made significant strides in college basketball. UConn has also shown its relevance in previous seasons, making deep March Madness runs and winning back-to-back titles in 2023 and 2024. The two are constantly battling for titles and bragging rights, but other teams still step in and put up a fight against these powerhouses.
No matter what a team’s record may be, the Big East is full of scrappy play and tight matchups. Just last season, UConn defeated St. John’s by 32 points in one of their final regular-season games. A few days later, the squad concluded their season against Marquette, which was ranked the worst in the Big East, yet the Golden Eagles took down the Huskies. It was an upset for the ages and took the regular-season crown away from the Huskies. These things seem to happen in the Big East, so expect more in this upcoming season. The two frontrunners are still St. John’s and UConn, both returning key players and bringing in some of the best to continue their winning ways.
Teams such as UConn are setting up difficult schedules to add to their already aggressive Big East play. Coach Dan Hurley has prepared one of the toughest schedules in the nation for next season, aiming to return to the National Championship game. Other teams, such as Seton Hall, are starting to follow in their path as the team announced a home-and-home series against Alabama for the 2026-27 and 2027-28 seasons. St. John’s is also looking for tough opponents before conference play, showcasing their skills in tournaments such as the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas and creating their own home-and-home series against the Arizona Wildcats. These top teams are looking to find the toughest teams in the nation and play them for experience before battling in one of the country's hardest conferences.
The Connecticut Huskies are among the frontrunners to cut down the nets this upcoming season. Still, other programs, such as St. John’s, Creighton, and Villanova, are emerging as potential returnees to March Madness. The Big East is almost always a toss-up when it comes to final season rankings and deep runs in March. No matter what, there is always fierce competition and rivalries that run deep, either in regular-season matchups or the Big East Tournament in “The World’s Most Famous Arena,” Madison Square Garden. It is no surprise that this conference has so much history and anticipation each season; predicting who will remain on top is never certain.
