Bálor vs. ‘The Last Real Good Guy’: Who Earns a World Title Opportunity at SummerSlam 2026?
As Minneapolis prepares to host two nights of SummerSlam, the match card continues to take shape. One of the matches that was recently announced holds a huge stipulation in terms of what the world title picture will look like on SmackDown in the near future. ‘The Last Real Good Guy’ Sami Zayn will challenge Finn Bálor, with the winner earning a world title opportunity. Will the ‘PRINXE’ earn his first world title opportunity since moving to the blue brand, or will Zayn rewrite the wrongs that led to him losing the Undisputed WWE Championship after just nine days?
Zayn has felt very disrespected over the last few months. The former Undisputed WWE Champion’s friendship with Cody Rhodes began dwindling little by little, and while ‘The American Nightmare’ was focused on constant attacks from Gunther, he was also dealing with Zayn’s antics. The relationship was shattered when ‘The Last Real Good Guy’ was inserted into the world title match, making it a Triple Threat Match. Zayn shockingly pinned Rhodes to win his first world title on the main roster. Just nine days after winning the title, ‘The Last Real Good Guy’ was forced to defend it against a returning CM Punk, and Zayn would end up losing the match and his title. The former Undisputed WWE Champion has been very vocal about receiving a rematch for the title, but SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis said he had to earn it. Zayn teamed with Gunther against Rhodes and Punk at Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 18th, but failed to win the match. Despite the loss, ‘The Last Real Good Guy’ was still given the opportunity to challenge for the title if he could win against another challenger at SummerSlam 2026.
Bálor’s 2026 has been a roller coaster of emotions. After failing to capture the World Heavyweight Championship off of Punk at Elimination Chamber 2026, his relationship with Judgment Day began to break down. After refusing to aid ‘Dirty’ Dominik Mysterio in an Intercontinental Championship match, Mysterio questioned where Bálor’s loyalty lay. An argument between the two led to the group turning on Bálor, effectively kicking him out of Judgment Day and leaving the ‘PRINXE’ all alone. Bálor would get his revenge against ‘Dirty Dom’ at WrestleMania 42, when he brought back his ‘Demon’ persona to help him overcome the odds. Following his feud with his former Judgment Day brethren, Bálor was traded to SmackDown, where he’s been carving his own path. The ‘PRINXE’ would knock off Trick Williams, Royce Keys, and Damian Priest in a Fatal-Four-Way Match to challenge Zayn in a Top Contender’s Match at SummerSlam 2026. Bálor hopes to win this match and attempt to capture his first world title since winning the Universal Championship in 2016.
Zayn wants to silence the doubters and reclaim the throne he was only able to hold onto for nine days. Bálor wants to win his first world title on the main roster in over a decade. Both men have something to prove and could be excellent challengers to Punk’s world title. Which man will come out on top at SummerSlam 2026?
