Could J.J. McCarthy Replace the Giants 32-Year-Old QB for Their 2026 Week Four Game?

NFL

The New York Giants had a busy week after beating the Tennessee Titans in late September. After that win, which the team got with four field goals, the Giants made a major trade and brought in Vikings backup quarterback J.J. McCarthy. This came after the Giants lost their star 23-year-old quarterback, Jaxson Dart, for the rest of the season. Big Blue had no choice but to make moves after their starting quarterback and former backup, Jameis Winston, struggled to throw touchdowns in his first regular-season game. The Giants need to start making touchdowns instead of kicking field goals on every other drive.

McCarthy has a history of being a decent college quarterback. This young Michigan State quarterback led his former college team to a state championship. In college, the 2024 first-round pick threw for 6,226 yards, 49 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. That doesn’t mean he will let New York take a fall during his time here. The young playcaller has another chance to lead this nearly well-put-together Giants team.

Fans and Analysts are questioning every decision about what is going on at the starting quarterback position. They are giving the veteran play caller a chance to prove himself in the next few games. If he cannot make it happen, it could turn into a Russell Wilson situation all over again, with Winston sitting on the bench while McCarthy calls the plays for New York. He could get playing time if the veteran player can't deliver the touchdowns New York needs. Big Blue needs to decide how to move forward with these two quarterbacks for the rest of the season.

This 2024 first-round pick has spent the week in New York learning the Giants’ offense, just in case head coach John Harbaugh needs him. His brother personally called him about the quarterback, and he is ready to develop him into a top starter. However, he’s not expected to start on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, but the team has taken the time to show him what he needs to know. The team is still very uncertain whether he will remain the backup or become the third stringer. However, if he is learning the Giants' play calling, it means he may have a chance to be number two, and if it comes down to it, being number one.
