Could Letting Go of Jameis Winston Backfire for the Giants?
The Giants have had an overhaul this offseason in their quarterback room. Taking on not only three but four quarterbacks. They range from Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, Jaxon Dart, and Tommy DeVito, who they added on for one more year. However, the Giants are looking to make moves that should have been made long ago. One area that they are zooming in on now is the possibility of trading away Winston.
The rumors are currently swirling around in the Meadowlands. If the Giants do decide to trade Winston away to another team, it would indeed have value involved in it. The Giants franchise is failing to see how New York is benefiting from him staying on the team, even if he is not the starter this coming season. Winston, being the extra backup, will make a big difference in how the team does this season. Especially if something were to happen to Wilson during the regular season.
Winston is a decent backup for the Giants. This veteran definitely adds value to the team even as a backup. He is experienced and has been around in the league for almost the last 11 years. Winston has seen almost everything at this point, and he knows what he is doing on the football field when he gets the chance to play. Last season may not have been the greatest for him with the Cleveland Browns, but if the Giants do start him at any point, with how well and revamped they have made the offensive line, he may have a much better season this year. Last season, he threw for 2,121 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in 12 games with seven starts.
The Giants need to look at what really matters here, and that is having that extra backup veteran quarterback. He can help show Dart how to be better on the field. The Giants have discussed starting Dart this season, which automatically puts Winston in at third-string quarterback if this is the case. The Giants really need the extra pair of hands to help rebuild the room this season. If they don’t, they will just mess things up more for this franchise and will be back to the beginning once again. It would be a bad move on the Giants' part for them to give him up, even though they just brought him to the team's roster just before this year's draft.
