Dolphins Sign Super Bowl LII Champion Cornerback to Bolster Battered Secondary
After an offseason full of cat-and-mouse games, the Miami Dolphins are signing cornerback Rasul Douglas. The team's interest in Douglas first peaked long before Jalen Ramsey was traded; Miami was already looking to add a proven CB to their secondary in an effort to replace Kendall Fuller. Now with Ramsey gone, Miami has gone through several different experiments to try and find a CB who can play a meaningful role as their number one cornerback. Ian Rapoport reported this morning that the Dolphins are signing Douglas to a one-year, three-million-dollar deal to fill an obvious void in their secondary. Now with Douglas locked up, what does it mean for the Dolphins’ defense this season?
Douglas originally broke onto the scene with the Packers before being traded to the Bills in 2022 during the NFL trade deadline. He made 15 starts for the Bills in 2024, recording 43 total tackles, five passes defended, and one forced fumble. He’s definitely one of the better options available, and he won’t turn 30 until August 29th. The reason this will help the Dolphins so much is that Douglas will come in and immediately be a starting-caliber option on the outside. That’s obviously valuable at a position like cornerback. He’s also primarily a zone cornerback, which is what the Dolphins like to run under defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver.
Miami has been the talk of the league this year regarding their secondary. The team was hit hard early on as projected starting CB Kader Kohou went down for the year with a torn ACL, while newly signed veteran Artie Burns suffered the same injury just days later. That left Miami with the potential starting group of Jack Jones and Storm Duck on the outside, along with rookie sixth-round pick Jason Marshall Jr., who has been turning several heads as of late. Still, that’s hardly an experienced or reliable group. With Miami now most likely locking down their secondary for the 2025 season, their next focus will be deciding who exactly will serve as their kicker for the first several weeks of the season. On top of that, the Dolphins will need to make some tougher decisions later today as they finalize their 53-man roster.
