Goal for Goal: González vs. Chawinga
Over the course of the 2025 NWSL season, Gotham FC’s Esther González and the KC Current’s Temwa Chawinga have been consistently battling it out for the season’s top scorer. Though they are not directly competing, it has been incredibly entertaining watching their goals continue to match or beat each other slightly. As of today, Esther Gonzalez holds the title for the top scorer of the season with a total of 13 goals out of 19 games, but Temwa Chawinga follows in a close second with a total of 12 goals out of 19 games. As the season continues with only a few weeks left in this year's season, one can only wonder which player will reign viciously and earn the title as 2025’s Top Scorer.
González is no stranger to the title of top scorer. Earlier this year, during the Women’s 2025 Euro this past summer, González earned the title of Top Scorer. During the vigorous tournament and while playing for Spain, González scored a total of four goals out of six games; because of her achievement, she was awarded the Golden Boot. González is known for being an unstoppable force with a great amount of experience, and with the addition of her talented offensive skills, she has and continues to be a great asset to Gotham FC.
Temwa Chawinga, forward for the KC Current, is playing in her second NWSL season and continues to dominate. Last year, during the 2024 NWSL season, Chawinga earned the title of Top Scorer with a total of 21 goals out of 27 games played. It was in this season that Chawinga famously scored against every team in the league, marking a great start to her career in the NWSL. Now, during this current season, Chawinga continues to be an impactful player for the Current. Her 12 goals have been instrumental in keeping the Current at the top of the league standings and securing their spot as the first team to qualify for this year’s playoffs.
When predicting who may become the top scorer of the season, many believe that Chawinga has a shot at the title, due to her previous record last year, and hope for her to obtain the title again for a second year in a row. Esther, on the other hand, continues to amaze others with her outstanding consistency, as an offensive player this year, especially this year during and after the Women’s Euro. Just the other night, in Gotham FC’s game against the San Diego Wave, Esther was the first to score a goal right before the end of the first half, setting Gotham up for the advantage. Temwa, on the other hand, continues to use her speed to overpower any defensive line. As the 2025 NWSL season nears the end, the thrilling battle between González and Chawinga promises to deliver an unforgettable finish as thousands of fans witness their offensive talent and skill getting pushed toward the limit.
