Ground Control: Inside the Giants Running Back Battle
The New York Football Giants running back room is shaping up to be one of the more intriguing competitions during this offseason. They have their veteran, Devin Singletary, leading the Giants' depth chart. However, the spotlight now points to the younger players on the team. Tyrone Tracy Jr., who is returning for his second season with the Giants, and Cam Skattebo. All who are trying to carve out a role for this up-and-coming season, and help the Giants do better than they have in the last several years.
Singletary brings consistency and experience to the team. He’s been with the Giants for the last few seasons. Singletary has struggled on the team, but they brought him back for this coming season. The 27-year-old is already presumed to be the team's starting running back for this year. He has 4,000 career rushing yards and a reputation for being reliable. This running back brings consistency to the team. He will be someone that a young rookie like Jaxson Dart can pass to during this offseason if the Giants decide to start him at all.
Tracy was drafted in the 2024 NFL Draft and has become a pivotal player for the offensive line. His rookie year was one that is unforgettable. Last season, he rushed for 839 rushing yards, 192 carries, averaged four yards per attempt, and scored five touchdowns for the Giants. He was also named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team because of how early on he made an impact for New York. He’s a dual threat and has a dynamic offensive option.
Skattebo is the newest running back to hit the Giants' offensive scene during this off-season. He was a fourth-round 2025 NFL Draft pick coming out of Arizona State. Skattebo has already become a favorite in the camp. This draft pick is very well known for breaking tackles and fighting for every yard that he is trying to pick up on the field. Many are looking forward to seeing what Skattebo can do and how big of an impact he can make with this team.
The backfield is already filled with rising stars, and the Giants need to decide who will continue to be a part of it this season. All three of which are competing to be the starting running back this season. Head coach Brian Daboll has no exact answer on who is going to start this season. However, each one of these running backs has something that they can contribute to the backfield. It’s going to be interesting during this offseason as to who will be leading the running back room this coming season.
