How Effective Can Big Blue’s Bruising Ball Carrier Be In the 2026 Season?
Cam Skattebo is set to be running and barging through defensive lines in the upcoming 2026 New York Football Giants season. Last season, he took the world by storm by being the classic running back who could take on nearly everyone who got in his way. Skattebo has spent a lot of time during the offseason recovering to return to his team and help make this season better, alongside all the new additions. There will hopefully be no stopping him, and Harbaugh has been keeping a very close eye on him to make sure that nothing happens to him before the season starts. However, many have asked about the effectiveness of the second-year running back this coming season.
Recovering From a Season-Ending Injury
The Giants' second-year running back left the field in Week Eight of the 2025 season when the Giants were playing the Philadelphia Eagles. The Giants' young running back suffered a gruesome ankle injury, putting him out for the rest of the season. He spent much of his time in a boot, but since then, he has been working to strengthen his leg. Skattebo has spent time at the practice field, practicing with his teammates. However, the new head coach has limited his playing time this offseason, especially with training camps coming up.
How the Giants Plan to Use Skattebo in 2026
With the former Arizona State standout coming off this ankle injury, it may take some time for him to be 100 percent again. The Giants' offensive coach, Matt Nagy, is ready for him to play for the team again this season. Nagy and Harbaugh have both turned to the run this season and have adjusted the playbooks around both their quarterback Jaxson Dart and Skattebo. This offensive coach wants to put him in, using his bruising style, rather than asking him to completely change how he plays because of his injury.
A Difference-Maker in Short-Yardage Situations
Big Blue also will have plenty of goal-line opportunities this season. Last season, this bruising ball carrier was one of the many reasons the Giants were able to score. On third downs, he was often the one breaking through defensive lines to get into the end zone. It was a big help for this New York team to get anything on the board. With this upcoming season, this team shouldn’t have issues when he returns.
A Dynamic One-Two Punch with Tyrone Tracy Jr.
New York will also be able to convert third down once again. This running back was always good at getting the ball moving. He was Dart’s go-to guy. Running Back Tyrone Tracy Jr. may have been covering for him last season, but it wasn’t enough to make all the plays that Skattebo had made. With his return, the two should be able to split the workload and combine their talents.
Managing Expectations Early in the Season
There are concerns for the first month that he gets to play again. He may show signs of rust, but New York may take it easy on how many snaps he will be able to play. This team needs to make an effort to ensure he feels comfortable before getting back on the field. Running backs like him often need several games before they feel fully comfortable trusting their ankles again. Skattebo may be different, though, and may be ready to jump right back in.
Big Blue's Offense Is Trending Up
This offensive weapon has been working hard this offseason to return to playing again. However, he just needs to take it easy before going full force. This running back is going to be just as effective as he was the first time as long as he and the Giants are careful. The Giants are ready for him to play again, and that said, wide receiver Malik Nabers may also not be too far behind him. Big Blue should be ready for a huge season ahead with the return of these players.
