Should WWE Bring a Former Four-Time World Champion Back to the Main Roster?

WWE

Back on May 5th, it was reported that former four-time World Champion Alberto El Patrón, known as Alberto Del Rio in WWE, signed with the company as part of their acquisition of AAA. A few months later, on July 25th, the former AAA Mega Champion faced El Mesías at Alianzas, in which if El Patrón lost, he would be exiled from AAA. The former four-time World Champion lost, ending his third tenure in AAA. Many are wondering what’s next for ‘Mexico’s greatest export’. With John Cena’s farewell tour on its final legs, we know that Logan Paul will be his opponent at Clash in Paris, and Brock Lesnar should be in the mix for Cena’s opponent at the next premium live event with his huge, stunning return at SummerSlam. One legendary rivalry that took place during the 2010s was Cena and Alberto Del Rio. Bringing back this rivalry one more time could spice up Cena’s farewell tour more than people could have expected. No one expected Lesnar’s return, now what if the WWE decided it was time to bring back Del Rio in the mix of a stacked roster?

In 2011, Del Rio won the ‘Greatest Royal Rumble’, which was the first-ever 40-man rumble. Although he lost his World Heavyweight Championship opportunity at WrestleMania XXVII to Edge, the former AAA Mega Champion would later win the Money in the Bank briefcase over Alex Riley, Jack Swagger, Kofi Kingston, Rey Mysterio, R-Truth, The Miz, and Evan Bourne. Del Rio would cash in his briefcase at SummerSlam on CM Punk after Hall of Famer Kevin Nash brutally attacked Punk, which made Del Rio the first-ever Mexican-born WWE Champion. The former four-time champion lost his title to Cena at Night of Champions 2011, but regained the title from Cena at Hell in the Cell. Almost a month later, Del Rio lost the title to Punk. In January 2013, the former AAA Mega Champion won his first World Heavyweight Championship after defeating The Big Show. Del Rio would later lose his title to Dolph Ziggler, who cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase. Yet, he would regain the title from Ziggler at Payback 2013.

Del Rio is currently 48 years old. There may not be a lot of time left in his career for another World Championship run, but enough time for one more solid run in the WWE, being admired before he decides to walk away from the squared circle. Bringing back Del Rio during Cena’s farewell tour would bring back the nostalgia that this run has been aiming to give the WWE Universe. There’s really no other time that would be more perfect than having Del Rio come back to WWE. Now, it’s a matter of time if WWE decides to pull the trigger on their former four-time World Champion.
