Why the ‘Second City Saint’ Should Win Money in the Bank
Back in 2008 and 2009, the ‘Second City Saint’ CM Punk won the Money in the Bank ladder match. He still is the only WWE superstar to win Money in the Bank in back to back years. In 2008, Punk cashed in his contract against ‘The Rated R Superstar’ Edge on Monday Night Raw, and a year later, ‘The Best in the World’ cashed in his briefcase against Jeff Hardy at Extreme Rules. Punk has another chance to qualify on Monday Night Raw in a triple-threat qualifier that consists of him, AJ Styles, and El Grande Americano. The ‘Second City Saint’ should be the odds-on favorite to win this qualifying match, however, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Seth Rollins’ new faction prevent Punk from advancing on to Money in the Bank on June 7th. If Punk were to win this match on Monday, he would advance to a fifth Money in the Bank ladder match, and if he were to win on Sunday, he would become the only three-time Money in the Bank winner.
Even though there are a ton of favorites to win the Men’s Money in the Bank match, such as LA Knight, Seth Rollins, or even Solo Sikoa, it only feels right to have Punk included in this matchup. Since WWE went a different route with a useless match like Cody Rhodes and Jey Uso facing John Cena and Logan Paul, the ‘Second City Saint’ should still get his shine at a premium live event he made infamous in 2011. Many fans feel like on June 7th, we should have seen Cena against Punk as it’s almost the same story playing out, except in reversed roles. ‘The Best in the World’ has been itching to get back into the World Championship picture since returning to WWE at Survivor Series 2023, and winning the briefcase for a third time would bring solidarity back to Punk’s world as he’ll be a threat to both World Champions in Cena and Uso. Ever since his feud with Drew McIntyre, Punk has shown he’s still capable of being a top guy, and after the triple-threat at WrestleMania XLI against Rollins and Roman Reigns only solidified that statement. Competing at Money in the Bank may stop someone like Rollins from becoming the favorite and winning it all.
Punk has expressed interest in not wrestling too late in his career. At 46 years of age, he’s definitely close to the end, but there may be a few years left in the tank. Many would like to see one more World Championship reign for the ‘Second City Saint,’ and perhaps cashing in on someone like Cena could be bittersweet. Someone like CM Punk should hold the record for the most Money in the Bank wins; he’s cashed in on two of the best WWE has seen and looks to create a new chapter with another defining title run. He’ll certainly be eyeing the briefcase and dare to go on another 434-day title run as he did over 10 years ago. ‘The Best in the World’ has the oppurtunity to rewrtite WWE history once again, hopefully he’ll get the job done during his qualifying match on Monday.
