Yankees 25-Year-Old Rookie Ready to Replace Trent Grisham for 2026 Stretch Run
Spencer Jones, the New York Yankees’ 2022 first-round pick, had the franchise infatuated with his height and an athleticism rarely seen in a big man. His speed compared easily with the smaller, faster runners on the roster, if not better. If he did not have such a hole in his swing, he would be considered the perfect player. Perhaps a lefty version of Aaron Judge, or so the comparisons go.
Yet, it has taken Jones three stints to begin scraping his vast potential. The point is that each demotion and promotion has bred improvement. When much-needed reps could not be had on the big club, he would go back to the farm and work on his offensive game. Therefore, when the 25-year-old returned each time, the strikeouts became fewer, the contact more frequent, the power more prevalent. Losing Judge forced the Yankees to finally make a decision about whether they would open a lane for their flawed but improving talent.
It's the stance that has been the obstacle. Jones has tried several, even mentioning how he wants to pattern his swing after the four-time NL MVP Shohei Ohtani. The front-foot timing mechanism looks ugly, but the 25-year-old has settled on something. In only 66 games, he has proven to be devastating to lefty pitchers, hitting .400 with an OPS of 1.161, which is ironic considering the Yankees saw him as weak against southpaws. Jones has proven to be strong against righties to the tune of a .283 average. He uses the entire field, hitting for power and average. If the 25-year-old had the requisite at-bats to qualify, he would be the third-best hitter on the club. This batting renaissance is a direct threat to Trent Grisham, the expensive re-signing that has reverted to his mean in 2026.
The only argument for playing Grisham over Jones was his defense, which had declined steadily for two years, with his pedestrian approaches to fly balls that regularly flew over his head or dropped in front of him in the largest part of real estate in Yankee Stadium. In the interim, the California kid embraced the opportunity to play in right field and occasionally in center and left. This allowed him to display his physical skills on the defensive side of the ball, featuring elite speed with a strong arm honed from his years as a high school pitcher. In short, he is at this moment superior to the $22 million center fielder in all facets of the game. At 25, Jones appears ready to be included as part of the nucleus that will make a run for the 2026 World Series.
The Yankees started the year doing one thing differently. Decisions were made quicker and adjustments made based on merit. As the season progressed and Jones was sent down twice, it implied a return to business as usual. Yet, as management has started to feel the pressure of winning a championship, they have had to start reading the room better and are prepared to make surprise moves. As they move into September, the feeling is that when Judge returns in right, Jones may usurp the slumping veteran and find a permanent spot between the three-time AL MVP and Cody Bellinger.
