Yankees Pick Up 80th Win and Beat the Angels in Their 2026 Season Series
On Wednesday night, the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Angels met for the final time for the 2026 season. During Monday’s matchup, the Yankees suffered their 60th loss of the season in a brutal 10-1 defeat, but got revenge Tuesday night in a 7-3 win. Their final game in the 2026 series featured a pitching duel between Cam Schlittler and Reid Detmers, with both starters shutting down their opponents’ lineup for the most part, each allowing a run. This Wednesday night matchup in Anaheim went to extra innings; however, the Bronx Bombers offense woke up, scoring five runs to make it a 6-1 game with the Angels getting their last licks. The Halos didn’t give up without a fight, scoring two runs from a home run by Moisés Ballesteros; however, it wouldn’t be enough as New York would take a 6-3 win, their 80th win on the year.
Schlittler’s Cy Young Case Continues to Grow
New York & Los Angeles’ final game of the year showcased great pitching: Schlittler pitched eight innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out nine; then Detmers went seven innings, allowing one run on six hits while striking out eight Yankees. The Bronx Bombers’ 25-year-old starter has an incredible 2.04 ERA with 210 strikeouts on the year through almost 172 innings. New York’s 2026 all-star starter allowed a hit by Vaughn Grissom early in the game, then retired 17 batters in a row before Grissom hit a game-tying homer in the bottom of the seventh inning. After each start, it’s clear that Schlittler’s case to become the 2026 AL Cy Young Award winner is becoming even clearer. He’s only given up two home runs since the MLB All-Star Break and continues to shine on the mound.
Yankees Wake Up at the Right Time & Boone Gets Ejected
The Yankees looked bleak besides Amed Rosario’s RBI ground-rule double. It wasn’t until the top of the tenth inning, and they had a runner in scoring position to start extra innings, that New York felt confident about swinging the bat. That’s when the runs were flowing, and the momentum felt like it had been there from the start of the game. Yet in the bottom half of the tenth, a bad call caused Yankees manager Aaron Boone to lose his cool and get ejected from the game. The Bronx Bombers should feel lucky they picked up the slack at the right time to earn themselves a victory and win the season series against the Angels.
